The Freshwater Alliance at Rollins (FAR) is a collaborative program that engages the Central Florida community in transdisciplinary and liberal arts-based approaches to spark learning and action related to our freshwater resources and ecosystems.

Rollins students tour a water reclamation facility

Through examining environmental and scientific issues related to freshwater, as well as embracing humanities-focused learning to explore social, economic, and cultural dynamics related to freshwater, FAR encourages a deeper understanding of the multifaceted issues affecting Central Florida’s watershed.

FAR collaborates with faculty, students, external partners, peer institutions, and community members to develop engaging learning experiences, such as the following:

  • Projects that bridge science and the humanities to increase engagement in freshwater topic areas.
  • Placed-based field opportunities and research projects focused on water quality, monitoring, aquatic amphibians, macroinvertebrates, potable water, archeological assessments along the St. Johns River, and other limnology-based topics.
  • Development of new curriculum and course redesign opportunities to increase interdisciplinary collaboration and embed freshwater content across disciplines.
  • Community outreach and engagement to support the public’s knowledge of issues impacting Florida’s freshwater ecosystems and foster responsible stewardship of our freshwater resources.
